It was May 18th, when it happened. I knew something was wrong I just couldn't put my finger on it. All day just felt weird to me.
I had just got done doing the dishes from supper, when there was a knock on the door. I being the only parent in the house, since Drew was in the war, answered the door. I saw a man dressed in a dark blue suit; he took his white hat off. His light brown hair was cut thin, he had light blue eyes, he was muscular, but that's what happens when you're in the Marines.
"Yes?" I replied.
"I'm Caption Christian Taylor. I'm hear to tell you that something happened " Tyler, our oldest child who is six comes running.
"Mommy?" He tugs on my pants, I look at him. "Is Daddy coming home yet?"
"We'll see babe, now will you go watch your sister for me?"
"Okay Mommy." He leaves. I turn to the man.
"Mrs. Anderson Do you mind if I come in?"
"Of course come in," I let him in. "Make yourself at home. Just let me put the kids
I look down at my younger brother. I knew this day would come But I didn't expect it this soon. It all happened so fast, we where watching his favorite movie when all of a sudden he couldn't breath. I drove him to the hospital where I paced back and forth in the waiting room, which stunk of cleaning supplies and latex gloves.
Ten minutes later an older man, who had graying hair and blue eyes, he's the doctor, came to me.
"Ms. Jade Winkels?" He asked.
"Yes?!" I run to him, "Tell me how is he doing?!"
The doctor takes off his glasses and lets out a sigh.
"Why don't we sit down?"
"NO! Tell me about my baby! Tell me that my brother is okay!"
"Ms. Winkels, please calm yourself, and have a set."
I obey; I sit on the squeaky chair. He takes a seat by me.
"Ms. Winkels. Your brother's heart stopped on the way here," He grabs me hand. "Your brother is dead." I feel frozen, like time has stopped.
"What?" I squeak. I feel so weak.
"Ms. Winkels. The disease took him. I'm sorry, there's nothin
Failure"She was right." Mocks the voice.
"No she wasn't asshole!"
"Yeah she was."
"Look if you want a fight then get out of my head and face me like a man!"
"I would but I don't want to catch your failure."
"I'm not a failure."
"You are too. She said so."
"She did not."
"I don't think Molly should go to college."
"Why not?!" Demanded my mother who was angry.
"Because Molly gets stressed out easily, and she's in Special Ed. She just wouldn't do good."
"Don't talk about my daughter like that! She's just like any other person. She just has to work harder!"
The older woman takes off her glasses. "She's just going to fail, and it'll cost her and you money. Lots of money..."
"See. Your just a failure." Announces the voice bringing me back to reality.
"What? No smartass comment?"
"Come on Molly, say something."
"Well it looks like my job is done for now."
"..." Tears fall down my face.
"I'll be back later."
"... I am a failure..."
The Voice...I open my eyes to find I'm in a small, dark room. This room has the smell of blood, and death. The only exit is a tiny door. I don't know how I got here Last I knew I was in my room, doing some homework. Then I hear it.
'You can't do anything right Your so worthless." The voice sounds deep and demonic.
"Nonsense." I reply to the voice.
' You will never be great.'
"Of course I will." I smile hiding what I really feel.
'Your lying to yourself. You shouldn't do that.'
I still smile.
"Well I'll make you see the truth. Look at this mess of a life you got yourself in.
I look it in the eyes. I can't describe what it is exactly. It's just everywhere. Everywhere I look. The cloud of smoke is there.
'Failed classes, friends and family hate you, your such a failure. I mean you let your best friend die. How can you live with that? Knowing that he gave his life for you.'
'Your not a Winkels. Winkels' don't fail.'
"I am to a Winkels!"
It cackles. "Lets compare yo
